UN Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing
In April CEO, Russell Westacott and Board Chair Margaret Duckett attended the United Nation UN Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing alongside other NGO’s to advocate for seniors’ rights. Hosted by the UN at their headquarters in New York, Russell and other NGOs outlined the inadequacies that exist in legal rights for older people.
Guests presented recommendations addressing the current shortfalls of legal frameworks and the vulnerable position in which this leaves seniors. The importance of reconciling these issues is of paramount importance. Russell also noted that increased international political support is vital to enshrine international rights for older people.
The Working Group’s acknowledgement of older people’s rights to autonomy, independence and long term care allows for the beginning of a worldwide standard to be created. We are proud that the voice of Seniors Rights Service was part of such an influential event to help improve rights of older people.
